(OTC Bulletin Board: VSPC) today provided an overview of the company''s progress, highlighting its Ionfinity subsidiary''s recent two year contracts from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. (OTC Bulletin Board: VSPC - News) an alternative energy company with subsidiary operations in security technology, is planning a mid-May 2009 field demonstration of its high-sensitivity system for detecting and analyzing chemical, explosive, and drug residues in suspect vessels. The demonstration is part of a competitively selected/awarded phase II contract for two years and up to $786,000 in funding.
Through its subsidiary Ionfinity, VIASPACE is developing a sensitive miniaturized "sniffer" in a joint collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech, General Dynamics, Sionex, and Imaginative Technologies. The development project, entitled "Miniature Electronic Sniffer for Navy Vertical Take off Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (VTUAVs)" was awarded by the U.S. Navy's Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program.
Ionfinity Chairman, Chief Operating Officer and Principal Investigator James Weiss said: "We believe the new sensor we will demonstrate will substantially raise the standard for future chemical detection and analysis and at the same time make the process much more convenient and timely."
Weiss added that while Ionfinity's new sensor technology has direct application in the $55 billion security industry, it is also expected to have commercial applications in environmental monitoring, agriculture and medicine.
According to the Company, the sensor is a compact stand-alone chemical device consisting of: 1) a new and powerful detector called a Differential Mobility Spectrometer; 2) a non-radioactive ionization method that does not fragment or multiply-ionize sampled specimens; and 3) a micro-gas chromatograph for confirmation and enhanced detection capability. According to Kukkonen, VIASPACE's renewable energy business is focused primarily on growing and selling Giant King Grass as a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative to coal currently being burned in electric power plants, and also as a raw material for producing natural gas and cellulosic biofuels.
Giant King Grass is a fast-growing, high-yield carbon-neutral crop that offers significant competitive advantages over other energy crops such as switchgrass and agricultural waste such as corn straw; its main advantage being two times to five times higher yield-per-acre than switchgrass, which translates into substantially more energy per acre.
A recent independent test of Giant King Grass confirmed its suitability as biomass for burning in electric power plants, and on September 14, 2009, VIASPACE announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Beijing-based DP CleanTech Company Limited, the world leader in the design and construction of biomass power plants and the largest biomass electric power provider in China. (OTC Bulletin Board: VSPC - News), a clean energy company growing Giant King Grass in China as a renewable, low-carbon energy crop, announced that CEO Dr. Carl Kukkonen toured a working DP CleanTech 30-MW (megawatt) power plant, which could be powered entirely with 175,000 metric tons of VIASPACE's Giant King Grass per year. At the current market price in China, the demand for Giant King Grass by just one such 30-MW power plant would provide about $6.3 million in additional annual revenue to VIASPACE.
Kukkonen visited the 30-MW Wangkiu biomass electricity generating power plant built and operated by Beijing-based DP CleanTech Company Limited. The Wangkiu plant, located near Harbin, currently uses corn straw as fuel for generating electric power. This corn straw is agricultural waste from corn crops within a 50 kilometer radius of their power plant, with approximately four tons of corn straw available from each acre of corn.
In comparison, Giant King Grass, yields more than 10 times the tonnage per acre, and, co-located as a dedicated energy crop, transport distances could be reduced by a factor of 10, thereby reducing transportation costs and related carbon emissions. And based on an earlier independent analysis, Giant King Grass is nearly identical to corn straw and therefore suitable for burning in DP CleanTech power plants.
DP CleanTech is a world leader in the design and construction of biomass power plants and the largest biomass electric power provider in China. DP CleanTech has built, owns and operates 19 biomass power plants that have a combined power-generating capacity of more than 400 MW.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, pellets made from Giant King Grass and other biomass can potentially replace up to 20% of the coal in an existing coal-fired power plant. Giant King Grass and other plants absorb carbon dioxide during their growth. When the grass is burned, it emits carbon dioxide, but the next crop of grass 90 days later absorbs the carbon dioxide, and the overall process can be nearly carbon neutral, and therefore reduces the carbon dioxide emissions of the power plant significantly. Many existing coal-fired power plants can be adapted at modest cost to replace part of the coal with biomass pellets in a process called co-firing. In a single 2,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant, replacing 20% of the coal with Giant King Grass pellets would require approximately 2.3 million tons of pellets per year and yield revenue of approximately $2.3 million at today's prices for biomass pellets.
As reported by the Associated Press on Sept. 30, 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) announced a proposal to reduce emissions--primarily carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels--from hundreds of electric power plants and other large factories and refineries in the U.S. According to the E.P.A., these large sources are responsible for 70% of the greenhouse gas emissions that are released each year. "By using the power and authority of the Clean Air Act, we can begin reducing emissions from the nation's largest greenhouse-gas emitting facilities without placing an undue burden on the businesses that make up the vast majority of our economy," E.P.A. Administrator Lisa Jackson said.

Compared to traditional batteries, fuel cells cleanly and efficiently convert methanol into electricity without burning and provide longer operating time and instantaneous recharging. VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) Subsidiary Reports Increasing Sales, Expanded Distribution of Framed Art
VIASPACE Inc. announced earlier today that its framed-art subsidiary Inter-Pacific Arts (IPA) signed sales contracts with four new customers. These customers included two large furniture chain-retailers on the East Coast and two high-volume furniture wholesalers that sell through catalogs and outlet stores. Shipments are anticipated to begin before this year’s holiday season.
According to the press release, the subsidiary is also in discussions with other retailers and wholesalers, including “big box” wholesale-to-the-public membership clubs.
IPA realizes that the economic downturn has affected all areas of consumer spending. However, the subsidiary’s commitment to increasing its customer base is expected to enhance sales growth in future periods as economic activity and consumer spending recover.
IPA President Sung Chang stated, “We see the current situation as an opportunity to expand our distribution network. To realize this growth opportunity, we are increasing focus on our competitive strengths — high-quality artwork, product selection, and pricing — to not only attract new customers but also retain existing customers. Our ability to fulfill high-volume orders and make timely deliveries were also key factors in signing our newest customers. VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) – Biomass Conference in Mexico City Spotlights Giant King Grass
One of the highlights of the international biomass energy conference held in Mexico City on October 7th was a leafy green plant of which most people have never even heard of. The plant is called Giant King Grass (GKG), and its remarkable properties make it a potential solution to the search for clean renewable energy.
In a recently released summary of a presentation given by Dr. Carl Kukkonen, CEO of VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB), GKG was shown to be one of the best potential biomass energy resources on the planet, with a range of other applications as well.
If anyone should know about GKG, it’s Carl Kukkonen, and his enthusiasm carries a lot of weight. Holding his PhD in Physics from Cornell, Dr. Kukkonen spent a number of years at Caltech as Director of the Center for Space Microelectronics Technology and Manager of Supercomputing at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 1992, he was awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal. He went on to be one of the co-founders of VIASPACE, Inc., a leading renewable energy company.
Dr. Kukkonen emphasized the importance of GKG as a renewable, low carbon, energy crop for use as a fast-growing biomass resource. The use of food crops, such as corn and soybeans, to produce ethanol continues to raise concerns that it could contribute to world hunger by creating an economic competitor for the crops. Other biomass sources, like agricultural and forestry waste, tend to vary in quality, and are insufficient for large-scale energy requirements.
What is needed, according to Dr. Kukkonen, are specialized crops, chosen and cultivated specifically for the energy market. Such a crop must be fast-growing, high in yield, and make efficient use of marginal land not suitable for food production. It also needs to be cost effective and help reduce carbon emissions.
Dr. Kukkonen pointed out that GKG has the highest per-acre yield of all known energy crops, and its growing characteristics make it suitable for large-scale long-term farming. Independent testing has confirmed its energy value, and it is also carbon neutral (meaning that the CO2 emitted when burned is offset by the absorption of CO2 during its growth).
In fact, VIASPACE is now actively growing GKG as a dedicated energy crop and is developing business relationships with electric power providers and other bio-fuel producers. There’s good reason for Dr. Kukkonen to be excited about GKG and what it could mean for VIASPACE. Not only can GKG be processed directly for use in biomass power plants, it can be turned into pellets, potentially replacing up to 20% of coal in existing coal power plants.
