![]() | CBAI CEO Discusses New Agreements and Cord Blood Bank Industry (Dec. 18, 2006) CorCell, the fourth largest private umbilical cord blood bank in the U.S. and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cord Blood America Inc. (CBAI), has entered into a marketing alliance with Highmark Inc., the largest health insurer in Pennsylvania and Mountain State Blue Cross Blue Shield (MSBCBS), the largest health insurer in West Virginia. Through the alliances, CorCell will offer cord blood banking services directly to Highmark and MSBCBS. Highmark serves 4.6 million people and MSBCBS provides coverage for more than 425,000 members. CEO Mark Schissler told Knobias, "This alliance will increases the knowledge and awareness of cord blood banking to MSBCBS and Highmark members through the Plans' education tools and in return, CorCell will offer a preferred price to their members for the cord blood banking services." A healthy person's stem cells continually replenish their blood and immune system cells. However, if the body has been decimated by disease or by medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation, new stem cells are necessary to rebuild the body's blood and immune systems. Previously the umbilical cord, which contains a rich store of stem cells, had been thrown away at birth. Cord blood stem cells can now be collected through a safe and non-invasive process and offer a powerful and potentially life-saving resource for treating a growing number of ailments, including leukemia, severe anemia, metabolic blood disorders and immune deficiencies with many additional uses currently under investigation in clinical trials. If a child's cord blood has been stored, there is immediate availability of matching stem cells for the child, eliminating the need to search for a suitable bone marrow donor. If another family member becomes ill with a disease treatable with cord blood stem cells, there is also a chance that the child's sample may be a match for them as well. Cord blood stem cells have a better chance of being an acceptable match because they are immunologically immature and undeveloped, especially in comparison to other sources of adult stem cells such as bone marrow or peripheral blood which require a 6 out of 6 tissue match. Mr.Schissler also noted, "Cord blood transplants have resulted in a significantly lower incidence of life-threatening side effects, such as severe graft vs. host disease, which occurs frequently in bone marrow transplants." CorCell's PurePathT process protects umbilical cord blood from airborne contaminants as the UCB is never poured from one container to another, and ports in the processing and storage bags are never punctured when processing agents are added, avoiding the possibility of spillage or exposure to bacteria and viruses in the air. In addition, all CorCell umbilical cord blood specimens are sterile processed in the company's private laboratory within Community Blood Services, an American Association of Blood Banks accredited blood bank located in Bergen County, N.J. Corcell CorCell President Marcia Laleman told Knobias, "Our recognized stem-cell harvesting procedure is preferred by obstetricians for its safe, simple, uncomplicated method. We arrange for a specialized medical courier to your hospital room to transport your baby's cord blood to our processing facility, in a time and temperature controlled environment. Finally, your baby's cord blood is stored in a recognized, state-of-the-art, AABB accredited cord blood banking facility that has successfully transplanted a significant number of cord blood units to date." She continued, "CorCell's advantage is its unparalleled expertise in collecting, transporting, processing and storing umbilical cord blood stem cells safely and confidentially and our commitment to ongoing quality improvement with technology such as PurePathT From the birth of your baby to final storage in our cord blood bank, CorCell gives you the sense of gives our families the security you they should demand from a private and personal cord blood bank." Mr. Schissler concluded, "CorCell's advantage in this market is its unparalleled expertise in collecting, transporting, processing and storing umbilical cord blood stem cells safely and confidentially; and serving the families of our strategic partners, such as Highmark who is commitment to giving their members a greater hand in their health. From the birth of your baby to final storage in our cord blood bank, we provide customers with a sense of security." |
