After Wednesday's closing bell, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said he will take a medical leave of absence until the end of June. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook will be responsible for daily operations. "Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well," Jobs said in a statement. "In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought."

Reportedly is close to getting billions in additional aid from the federal government. The additional aid is intended to help Bank of America integrate Merrill Lynch, which posted larger-than-expected losses in the fourth quarter. Bank of America has already received $25 billion in federal aid.

Will cut 100 positions at its corporate headquarters because of reduced store openings and consolidations of its retail and online operations. The bookseller said it will take a charge of about 4 cents a share in the fourth quarter as a result. The company said the action is the first time in its history it has had to trim corporate overhead costs. Barnes & Noble has about 40,000 employees.

Will cut 4,000 jobs in addition to previously-announced staff reductions, as it issued gloomy, preliminary fourth-quarter results. The mobile device and networking technology maker said in a statement that the job cuts are expected to begin immediately, and will include some 3,000 cuts in the company's Mobile Devices unit, and roughly 1,000 jobs "associated with corporate functions and other business units." Motorola said it expects fourth-quarter revenue to be between $7 billion and $7.2 billion, and a net loss from continuing operations between 7 cents and 8 cents a share.

Reported a fiscal third-quarter net income of $139.4 million, or 51 cents a share, compared with a net profit of $103.6 million, or 35 cents a share, for the year-earlier period. Revenue was $458.4 million, down 3% from $474.8 million a year ago. The chip maker's results included an $89.7 million pre-tax gain and a $19.5 million pre-tax impairment charge on investments. Analysts had expected the chip maker to report earnings of 32 cents a share on revenue of $443.7 million, according to a consensus estimate by Thomson Reuters.
