(Reuters) – Circuit City Stores Inc filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a court in Richmond, Virginia, according to a court filing. Highlights:

filing also covers at least 17 affiliates

says had $3.4 billion assets, $2.32 billion debts as of August 31

estimates has more than 100,000 creditors
