![]() | TORONTO, March 20 - Northern Gold Mining Inc. (TSX-V NGM) announces the results from the final 12 holes of the winter 2007-08 Bourkes Mine diamond drill program as well as check assay results from the fall 2007 Bourkes Mine Bulk Assay program. The high-grade past producing Bourkes Mine property is located in north-eastern Ontario, 22 km. north-west of the Kirkland Lake, Ontario gold-mining camp where to date more than 24 million ounces of gold have been produced. All 19 holes drilled targeting the Bourkes mineralized zone in this just completed program intersected the quartz-carbonate stringer zone that hosts the Bourkes mineralization. However despite the continuous nature of the Bourkes stringer zone, sampling and assaying of the drill intersections did not show a consistency in economic assay values. Northern Gold Mining is of the opinion that this result reflects the extreme gold nugget effect of the Bourkes gold mineralization. The 19 NQ size holes drilled through the Bourkes mineralization would only test 1/33,000th of one percent of the longitudinal areal extent of the Bourkes Mine. Considering the extreme variation in gold assay results from the 19 intersections from this program (from 404.92 g/t over 0.3 metres in B07-15 to 0.06 g/t over 0.7 metres in B07-04) Northern Gold Mining is of the opinion that the only means to accurately test the Bourkes Mine is to get underground to observe and sample the mineralization continuously along the pre-existing drifts and shaft. Such underground work was discussed in the NI 43-101 report on the Bourkes property and is also referenced in Northern Gold Mining Inc.'s prospectus. Therefore Northern Gold Mining is holding discussions with a local mining contractor and is well along in its permitting process to gain access to the top two levels of the mine for a rehabilitation, sampling and mapping program tentatively scheduled for 2008. << ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drill From To Length Au Hole Location Dip Azim. The Bourkes Mine is known anecdotally as suffering from an extreme gold nugget effect. In gold deposits with a high nugget factor gold is very rarely uniformly distributed throughout the vein structure, but rather, occurs as clusters of small particles or single masses of spectacular "nuggety" gold. This random, unpredictable distribution of gold influences all sampling of gold mineralization and is especially problematic in considering results from a small population of drill intersections relatively broadly spaced such as that from the Bourkes Mine drill program. Bourkes Bulk Assays As a QA/QC procedure Northern Gold submitted 14 separate pulps and rejects from its fall 2007 Bourkes bulk assay program (Northern Gold Mining press release, Nov. 28, 2007) to Swastika Laboratories for check assays. The results from these check assays confirms the grade from the bulk assay program and shows further indication of the high gold nugget factor of the Bourkes ore. The 14 check sample assays ranged from a high of 148.39 g/t to a low of 2.32 g/t resulting in an uncut arithmetic average of 18.85 g/t. In other news Northern Gold Mining is continuing with its drill program on the ice of Frederick House Lake in the Timmins area. Despite encountering deep overburden to a 60 metre depth 2 holes have been completed to date with assays pending. With the below normal late winter temperatures in the area over the last two weeks it is hoped that drilling will be possible on the ice into the first week of April. As well overburden drilling of the Sylvanite tailings basin on Northern Gold's Kirana property 5 km. north-east of Kirkland Lake, Ontario continues. Northern Gold Mining has implemented a quality assurance and control (QA/QC) program to ensure sampling and analysis of all exploration work is conducted in accordance with the best possible practices. The drill core is logged and split with half core samples sent either to Swastika Laboratories, Swastika, Ontario or Polymet Laboratories, Cobalt, Ontario and analyzed using the appropriate gold fire assaying technique. The other half of the core is retained for future assay verification. For QA/QC purposes the Company submits blanks and standards every 50 samples. Approximately 5% of sample rejects and/or pulps will be sent to a different lab from the lab which ran the original assay for check assaying. The bulk sample check assays were collected from rejects from the original bulk assay lot and analyzed at Swastika Laboratories using the appropriate gold fire assaying technique. R.V. Zalnieriunas, P.Geol., is a "Qualified Person" as defined by NI 43-101 and has reviewed this release. Northern Gold Mining Inc. is a well-financed Toronto-based junior resource company dedicated to gold exploration in the proven mining camps of Kirkland Lake and Timmins in Northern Ontario. The goal of our experienced and highly-skilled management team is to maximize shareholder value through successful exploration and the aggressive testing of high quality targets such as our advanced-stage past-producing gold properties located in the Kirkland Lake and Timmins area.
