Sales of diabetes drugs could soar from $12 billion now to $26 billion in 2011, according to investment research firm Sanford C. Bernstein. At that point diabetes drugs could generate more sales than cholesterol-lowering pills do now. "It is a big growth area, no question," says Novartis (nyse: NVS - news - people ) Chief Executive Daniel Vasella, whose firm has one diabetes drug on the market and hopes to receive approval for a second one later this year

ZURICH (Dow Jones)--Swiss drugmakers Roche Holding AG (RHHBY) and Novartis AG (NVS) will both report healthy growth in third-quarter sales next week, analysts said. Basel-based Roche will report a 16% increase in sales to CHF10.24 billion ($8.05 billion), led by a 19% increase in revenue to CHF8.05 billion at its flagship pharmaceutical unit, according to an average estimate of 12 analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.
"In the third quarter we expect another strong performance for the pharmaceutical division driven mainly by the Genentech products on a global basis, as well as the first-time contribution from Lucentis in the U.S. and a strong performance from Tamiflu," analysts at Credit Suisse said in a note to investors.
Eye disease treatment Lucentis and cancer drugs Avastin, Herceptin and Rituxan were developed by Genentech Inc. (DNA), a U.S. biotechnology company majority owned by Roche. Genentech is selling these drugs in the U.S., and Roche consolidates the Genentech sales. With the exception of Lucentis, which is sold by Novartis AG (NVS), Roche is selling the drugs outside the U.S.
